Miss Understood and the Basket Bunch Miracle- A Fruit Parable
Monday, April 27, 2009

Miss Understood watched from her spot on the window sill, as all the other fruit in the kitchen prepared for the Big Basket party. Every weekend, without fail, she watched this party get planned, shopped for, and then executed. And every weekend, she stood by, on the sidelines, in the widow sill, in her own designated spot, away from the other fruit of the kitchen, as they washed and shined themselves for the Big Basket event. Each weekend, she wondered what it would be like to be part of the Basket bunch. It looked like a good time. The other fruit always seemed so happy when they went to the Basket. And when they got there, and had themselves fully and beautifully arranged in the Basket, how lovely and perfect they all looked, each with their own unique gift, flavor and color ... causing the Basket to be a raging success. She could always hear them singing and whooping and having some sort of celebration, but she was too far away on the sill to really understand what was going on. All she knew is that it looked like a really great time.

She often thought of going, but always talked herself out of it. Miss Understood had seen what had become of other tomatoes who had tried going the whole Basket Party route, and it had not been pretty. Oh sure, the apples and the pears did fine there. The bananas and the oranges and the grapefruits. The pineapples and the lemons and the limes ... they all did well too. Even the plums, nectarines, peaches and grapes did okay, if they were careful. But her other tomato friends who had tried going to the party, had often been bruised, banged up, cut, and even bled out on the other fruit. Then they had been sent off to the cold place after that. Everyone knows that a tomato can only stay on the kitchen side of the cold place if they keep their skin in one piece. Once the thin skin that covers their succulent and juice-filled flesh is broken, the juice will seep out all over the other fruit causing an awful mess. Plus, what tomato girl in her right mind wants to be cut by other fruit just for trying to go the Basket? Not her, she firmly decided. No sir. She didn't care what marvelous things she might be missing out on at the Basket party. She would simply stay "home" on her window sill perch where she was safe with all the other tomatoes.

Besides, she knew that she was not even truly accepted among the other fruits as fruit. As far as they were all concerned she was a vegetable, and as such, had no place in the Basket. She could tell by the way they looked at her. Oh sure, some of the other fruits were friendly and said hello to her sometimes. And sure, they would even occasionally smile in her direction, but more often then not, as soon as they got where they thought she couldn't hear them, she heard them snicker and whisper under their breath with disapproving tones. She knew what they thought of her. She was a tomato. A vegetable. Not worthy of the fruit Basket party. She got it, alright. And she knew she wasn't worthy too. So what if she was truly a fruit, just like any of them? Wasn't she even classified as a vegetable by the Chefs and culinary Officials? She knew being a fruit wasn't enough. She had to be a certain KIND of fruit. The right kind. The sweet kind. The kind that was good served on cereal or with whipped cream. And she wasn't that kind of fruit. She didn't need them to tell her she looked, smelled, and tasted different than all of them.

She had come to accept it, and although it made her sad, Miss Understood knew that was just the way it was. Sometimes she and some of the other tomatoes were allowed to have their own little mini-basket parties, but it just wasn't the same as being included in the Main Basket on the Main
Table in the Main Dining Room.

But she knew she would have such a different kind of life if she could just figure out how to interact with the fruit of the Basket. She wanted so badly to try, but she was afraid. All she had ever known was how to be a tomato. How to be part of a salad, how to make a wickedly delicious sauce. How to spruce up a sandwich. And how to look beautiful, sitting alone, away from the other fruit, in the window sill, just doing her best to keep her skin all in one piece so she wouldn't be sent off to the cold place. And besides, everyone knows that tomatoes are supposed to stick together. Even at the market, while all the other fruit is displayed on a long bin, all in their own section, but sitting right next to each other, the tomatoes are off in another area ... alll by themselves, far, far away from all the other fruit. She supposed she should just give up on her dream of being included in the Big Basket. She was destined to be a tomato, and that was that.

Then one day, the most unusual thing begin to happen. It all started in the teeniest, tiniest way. She was sitting there on her window sill one day, when three peaches strolled over to her sill and said, "Hi. How are you today, Miss Understood? You're looking beautiful. We noticed that you looked a little lonely and sad, though, and thought we'd come and visit you. We know it's difficult for you to come to the basket where all the sharper fruits are, with their tougher skins and sometimes spiny exteriors, so we thought we'd just come hang out with you, here on the sill. Would you mind?" Miss Understood was tempted to be skeptical, but these gals looked different than the fruit she was used to dealing with. They were really looking at her, not through her. Their smiles seemed so warm and sincere. They truly seemed interested. And kind. Yes, really kind. And like they understood what her life as a tomato was like. She didn't know how they could know, but well ... she was thrilled! "Oh sure", she hopped over a bit so the peaches could sit with her, and they spent the afternoon talking and having a wonderful time sharing experiences together. It turned out that the peaches were more like her than she thought. Sure, they hung out in the Big Basket with the rest of the fruit, but she was surprised to find out that they had also been to some of the places she had been, such as Salsa, Sauce, and Preserves. Some of the peaches in their family had even been Canned, just like some of hers had. She'd had no idea! Wow.

After they were gone, she felt all warm on the inside, although she didn't really know why. She guessed it just felt good to be included and to feel like somebody cared about her. Miss Understood ... just a tomato ... just like she was. She liked it, she liked them, and she found herself hoping they would come back. And they did, the very next day ... and this time, they brought a plum with them. And the next time, a pear came along, too. And the next time after that, a whole bunch of grapes showed up, and then an orange, and a lime, and a banana ... till one day, as they sat partying together on the sill, she looked over to the basket and realized it was empty. Every fruit in the basket had come to where she was! They had brought the party to her! So she began telling all of her Miss Understood family and neighborhood about the great time they were having, and before too long they were all sharing and caring for one another right there on the sill. Then one day, the sill was too small to hold all of them, and they had to find a new place to hang out, so the other fruit invited her and all of her tomato gang back to the Main Dining Table to hang out with them at the Basket, and suddenly Miss Understood wasn't afraid of getting in the Basket with the other fruit. She knew now that they cared about her, and even though she bruised easily and her skin might break under other circumstances, she knew she would never have to worry about that with these fruits ever again. She had discovered a secret about them. They were not just any fruit, they called themselves Juiceefruit ... they were the fruit of the spirit. And, this made them very special. Over time, Miss Understood came to realize what this meant. It meant they would rather hurt themselves than hurt her. All they wanted was to help her feel loved, accepted and happy like they were. It meant that they were loving, joyful, full of peace, patient, kind, (yup, she had noticed the kindness the first day the peaches came to visit). They were so good, and visited her faithfully. They were so gentle with her. They wanted her to know that they now realized she was fruit just like them and they were sharing that news with all the other fruit they knew. So they had learned her secret, too. She was not a vegetable ... she was a tomato ... and more than that, they told her something she didn't know ... that the tomato was the biggest, juiciest, plumpest berry of the entire berry line. As far back as berries went, the tomato was the biggest ever. So big, that even the other berries hadn't known Miss Understood was a berry.

They all learned something else, too: The same Gardener had grown them all. Everyone of them! And The Gardner loved them all the same. She shared the news with her other tomato friends, and they shared it with theirs. She finally knew she had found a place she could still be herself, and yet enjoy being the fruit she was grown to be! True, she might be a tomato, different looking, different smelling and different tasting from the other fruits, but by God, she was still a fruit! She was sooo happy. Soon she begin to feel like she was a fruit of the spirit, too ... just like they were. And she was!

She had simply been a fruit who was Miss Understood.

you say an unkind word
Think of someone who can’t speak.

You complain about the taste of your food
Think of someone who has nothing to eat.

You complain about your husband / wife / Boyfriend/ Girlfriend
Think of someone who’s crying out to God for a companion

Before you complain about life
Think of someone who died too early on this earth in a tragedy car accident.

You complain about your children
Think of someone who desires children but they’re barren.

You argue about your dirty house someone din’t clean or sweep
Think of the people who are living in the streets.

Whining about the distance you drive
think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

you think of pointing the finger or condemning another colleague/ friend/ love ones
Remember that not one of us is perfect.
You are tired and complain about your job
think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job. (Or at least have a job)

Depressing thoughts seem to get you down-
Put a smile on your face and think:
You’re alive and still around.

How bad can our circumstances get?
Or is it how negative can our mindset get sometimes?

Rights VS Responsibilities!
Wednesday, April 08, 2009

We are responsible to God to become what God has made it possible for us to become.

Political groups and social organizations like to talk about the "rights" of their members. They want the full entitlement to the benefits that are rightfully theirs. Rights are all about "me, me, me."

That is not the attitude God wants us to have. He wants us to forget about our rights and focus on our responsibilities. He wants us fully engaged in helping others. Responbilities are all about "you, you, you."

God wouldn't be a very popular politician in our society. Most people want to be served and enjoy their priviledges. God calls us to be submissive and put the interests of others above our own. It is possible only if God can change our attitude. Are we willing to let Him?

Facebook, YouTube At Work Make Better Employees ?
Tuesday, April 07, 2009

Caught Twittering or on Facebook at work? It'll make you a better employee, according to an Australian study that shows surfing the Internet for fun during office hours increases productivity.
The University of Melbourne study showed that people who use the Internet for personal reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive that those who do not.

Study author Brent Coker, from the department of management and marketing, said "workplace Internet leisure browsing," or WILB, helped to sharpened workers' concentration. "People need to zone out for a bit to get back their concentration," Coker said on the university's website

"Short and unobtrusive breaks, such as a quick surf of the Internet, enables the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total net concentration for a days' work, and as a result, increased productivity," he said.

According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work engage in WILB.

Among the most popular WILB activities are searching for information about products, reading online news sites, playing online games and watching videos on YouTube.

"Firms spend millions on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online under the pretence that it costs millions in lost productivity," said Coker. "That's not always the case."

However, Coker said the study looked at people who browsed in moderation, or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office.

"Those who behave with Internet addiction tendencies will have a lower productivity than those without," he said.

John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

There is a big difference between acquaintances and friends. Accquaintances are people that we know. They pop into our life (whether you want them to or not) as the result of our circumstances. So, we have acquaintances at work, in our neighbourhood, and at church. These are the people who may be very nice, but our relationship with them is defined more by contact than by commitment.

One characteristic that distinguishes acquaintances from friendship is loyalty. Friends are committed to each other. They are willing to make personal sacrifices for each other. They don't keep score of who owes a favor to whom. If you have true friends, then thank God for them. They are rare commodities. If you need to increase your friendship network and find a few, then start by being the king of friend you would want to have.

If not us, who?
Monday, April 06, 2009

Trust God to direct the circumstances of your life even if you don't know what He's doing.

The Bible records an event in 479 B.C., when a beautiful Jewish woman named Esther became queen of Persia. It was no accident. God arranged the circumstances of her life in order to elevate her to a high position, and then He used her to save His people.

Whenever we are promoted to a higher position - whether it's in our job, in school, or in the cimmunity - we need to recognize that God has put us there for a reason. We may not know right away, but we have trust God that His timing is perfect, and we need to stay humble with the knowledge that He wants to use us to serve and influence others and glorify Him.

On Investments!
Sunday, April 05, 2009

Spend more of your time and energy investing in people that you do investing in things.

A good investment is determined by the safety of your capital and the rate of return. If you are going to put your money into something, you want to make sure that it won't be lost and you'll be paid a good dividend.

These same principles apply to the investment of our time and energy.Don't waste your valuable time with frivolous endeavors. Put your effort where it will count and pay off. You may receive the best return on your investment when you put time into other people. You can invest in them through acts of kindness and thoughtfulness. You aren't likely to see monetary returns on your investment, but you are guranteed spiritual rewards because your good deeds honor God Himself.

Don't just pretend that you love others.

Romans 12:10
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;

Saturday, April 04, 2009

Leaders are readers.

Everyone wants to follow a leader who is informed and wise, but nobody wants to follow a leader who is a know-it-all. There is a substantial distinction between the two types. Wise leaders know what they can learn from others. The know-it-alls think that there is nothing that others can add to their vast storehouse of knowledge.

Effective leaders are anxious to gain insights from other sources. This is usually means reading books and articles on the subjects that are relevant to their reponsibilities. The Bible is the best book for this purpose. It deals with the dynamics of personal relationships, and that is what leadership is all about.

If you are in a position of responsibility, make the Bible your leadership manual

Thoughtful compliments wear better than impulsive flaterry.

We are all wary of insincere friendships. So many people bring ulterior motives into a friendship. It is hard to know whether they are really interested in us as a friend, or whether they just want to get something from us or sell something to us. Skepticism is natural if the dinner party turns into a pitch for membership in a resort.

We can pave the way for meaningful friendships if we dispense with flattery. It is always shallow and usually transparent. It creates an atmosphere of insincerity in the relationship.

Make our convesation count. Learn to give compliments that are meaningful and appropriate. A legitimate, sincere compliement shows that we are aware and appreciative of someone else's effort. That is the stuff on which real friendships are built.

Finish what you start!
Thursday, April 02, 2009

People will be more impressed by what you finish than by what you start.

How we love to start stuff! We begin a project with energy as we envision the wonderful result. We enter into a new relationship with enthusiasm as we anticipate the rewarding experience. But sometimes the project bogs down or the relationship sours, and rather than taking things to their proper conclusion, we quit. (Of course we don't use the word "quit." We prefer to say we "lost interest.")

Jesus once told a parable about what it means to start something. Whatever it is, we need to see it through, or else we shouldn't start in the first place. The principle applies to material things and relationships, specially our relationship with God. Jesus was real blunt about this. God isn't something to sample and then discard when we lose interest. We are to take Him seriously and believe that when we begin our relationship with Him, we need to see it through.

So no matter how dry we may feel in our spiritual life now, hang on. Don't give up so easily cause God will never give up on us. Perservere on and run the race!

SOT 2007
Wednesday, April 01, 2009

SOT 2009 just started this Monday, as I think back...its been 2 yrs since I graduated from SOT..it was really a life changing period for me...having to wake up early, go for SOT and rushing for work, then at night give tuition and do my assignments and having to wake up early the next day, as I think back, its really the supernatural strength from God that kept me going..

When I was in SOT, me and a few others always chiong to sit the 1st row, and because of this, i have make a number of overseas friends though there was 0 overseas student in my team...i remember i would always reach bout 7.30 and the gate would open at 7.45, me and another guy Kok Siang will run to pastor's lift and i would take the lfit, he would run down the stairs to get the 1st row seats...the others would come down by lift 4,5 or 6...to make it fair, we set a rule that no one can help book seats in the 1st row...that time we still dunno each other yet...i would always book myself and madeline a seat in the 1st row and i would book seats for the rest of my team mates at the 3rd row...
My 1st row friends

My 1st row buddies With Pst Yong (Dannon, Carinne, Magdeline,Pst Yong, Eric, Ailyn & me)

That day before we took this picture, Pst was teaching bout cultural mandate and we were told to dress our best, and so we did :)

On the 1st day Pst Ming told us about finding a need and meet it and a hurt to heal it, we might be wondering how to find a need and hurt when we dun really now anyone...then he shared with us there is a couple...they have rented a house in the central and find a day care there for their child...initially our lessons were supposed to be at riverwalk...but changed to jurong west a week before we started, so the couple got to find a room and a new day care, they found it but the child is having a hard time settling in the new day care...i was wondering who are they, what we know is only that they are overseas students, both parents are in SOT... i told myself even if i cannot help this couple, i want to find a need to meet and a hurt to heal...

during the 1st week, we were given our 1st assignment-think is the spirit filled book..dun really remember the full title, we were supposed to write 3 points on every chapter and the summary of the whole book...hmmm..i chiong my assignments cause i dun wanna drag it...neither do i want to hand in any late assignments...and i kept to that rule throughout SOT, the 4 months despite the busy schdule, God always gave me the strength and energy to finsh my assignments and bible reading on time...I finished the 1st assignment bout 2 weeks before the deadline and one day i was just sitting in the 1st row waiting for lessons to start...then i turn and talk to this lady, her name is Ailyn...and i discovered that she have to share the assignment book with her husband and they share 1 laptop..normally the husband will do the assignment when the wife is putting the child to sleep and the wife would do her assignment when the husband showers...i ask how can they finish their assignment on time, she told me she is not sure...at that time, i just say if she dun mind, she can borrow my laptop to do the assignment...can u imagine what great faith i have in God for Ailyn, i knew her barely for 5 mins and i m lending her my laptop which i bought less than a month...she kept thanking me and that is how our friendship starts, the next day i was thinking its a bit useless for me to hold on to the assignment book so i lend it to her as well, and both her n her husband submitted 1st their assignments on time..then i realised they were the couple Pst was mentioning on the 1st day..Ailyn and I became very good friends, but she sit the left side of the 1st row and i sit on the right side...Kok Siang would always sit in the middle...and a few others...i also made friends with 6 taiwanese students (Amy 姐,Chiu Chin 姐, maggie who is Pst Wayne's PA in taiwan, Wei lu, ah mao and another i forgot the name cause now din contact le) who always sit on the 2nd row, they are very nice people...remember once i was sick and i reach church like 8.35...i thought i need to sit behind but the taiwanese students have reserved a seat in the 1st row for me, knowing i was sick and i could not be so early that day...really touched..

Wei Lu & Me

Amy 姐,Chiu Chin 姐, Wei lu and Ailyn are the few overseas friends who was there, to pray for me, pray with me and be there for me...though we know each other for a short time, but it seems we know each other for a veyr long time, during my last month in SOT, i was having difficulty in paying my sch fees and Amy 姐,Chiu Chin 姐 blessed me S$50 each...

Amy 姐 & Me

Still remember there is 1 event was i was preparing for my preaching test, i got everything, the points and everything..but i dun have the opening verse for it...both Jin Lian and Jerb ask me to change my sermon, it was already bout 10pm that day, i have to preach at 2pm the next day...i din wan to write a new sermon again cause i was really tired...i din noe what to do and i call Amy 姐...i shared with her...normally a friend's reaction will be i pray for you or give advice right? her reply was go and sleep...i was like huh..then she ask me even if i think till 2am...can i get the verse...i say maybe not...then she told me i need have enough rest cause next day still got lesson and i would need the energy, i would not be able to perform my best when preaching if i dun have enough rest...then she say she pray for me...that night when she pray for me...by hearing her prayer...i know she had been praying for me in her daily quiet time...can feel it and i was really touched...i had a good night rest that day...and the next day...6 hrs aways from my preaching test...i still dun have the verse...during worship, this particular verse kept coming to my mind, i check it up when we sat down...and the verse match every point that i had written down for the sermon...Praise God...

Last year when i left church for a while, when these overseas friends of mine know, they pray for me, called me and was there for me...its been 2 yrs and we have been in contact...esp with Ailyn, she just gave birth...I hope i can visit her soon in Sitiawan...I really miss her, Eric and Kayla...Kayla is such a sweet gal...for those who know me, they will know i have this scar on my hand, i always scratch it and thus the scar, till now haven recover, that time kayla in the train told me this "Serene jie jie, dun scratch" and she was only 1 or 2 yrs old...i think...she is a sweet gal...

Declare your Dependence!

Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.

The Declaration of Independence happened long before 1776. In fact, humankind declared its independence from God in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve believed the lie that they could live independent of God. Since then, we humans have been constantly struggling to do it our way.

God knows that true independence is impossible. There's no way we can function effectively if we are cut off from his His help. We are like branches in a vineyard. Once cut off, we die. Jesus is the true vine (John 15:1), and unless we are connected to Him, we will never truly be productive. And our so-called independence won't lead to freedom but to our own destruction.

John 15:4
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

"You are the light of the world. let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."
